Sketchy sketch

Ah, a day off from boarding, and no Franky to do! I'm gonna lighten things up a bit and get some negative space stuff ready for the convention open for commisions! Drop a line via my illustration website link to your left, whatever turns your crank.

Out to Sea

For those of you keeping track, I can't get past the last post which I'll be redoing.  I'll put a comparison up soon, as 47 pages of Frankenstein are now done aside from that and a couple tweaks & twerks. I enjoyed that more than I thought!

Keep on Smilin'!

Best to everyone over the Silly Season!

Wednesday, November 23, 2016

Due to a punishing storyboarding schedule, I had to find a resourceful way to get through this book asap, and have been quite happily surprised with the outcome! Believe it or not, thw whole thing's being done with Sharpie markers and Photoshop, resulting in a very energetic final product.  (Anyone that knows me from the cons knows my fondness of getting reckless on Sharpie fumes). This is a a panel about 4x it's proper size and hastilly coloured to finally get a post up here. I'll be going in and losing some lines and tinkering, but I think you get the idea. Nice, no?

Double Whammy Day!

Thanks to a busy schedule my Frankenstein adaptation'll be done in a more aggressive, sketchy style like this. I've been wanting to do a book more in line with my commission work for a while, but have had too much time to over render with brushes. If any story calls for a more energetic and rough style, it's this one. More to come!

In the meantime,  My subtler-than-neon dig at Trump short sightedness "America Owns the Moon" appears in this month's Heavy Metal magazine on the shelves soon!

Old School.

Big Bad Barda. Brush & ink, with a little felt tip accenting 11 x 17 commission. I've never drawn her before, she's a great character. Taking requests has definitely become my main activity at the Conventions, and I'm really looking forward to doing large quick gesture style commissions this year, it's going to be a party. Drop a line, this kind of quality looks great...well, in the bathroom, if you are attached.

By the way, I posted this on a FB inking page, had a bit of a back & forth with a guy regarding stle, brushes....and it became clear he'd never considered the fact this was a REAL BRUSH on REAL PAPER. Not his fault, I really am a dinosaur at this point, I guess.

Got aTaste for Something Original?

Aaaand off we go towards COMMISSION Season! There's some interesting requests coming down the pipe that I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into already, and here's the first one out've the gate! If you have a request, drop an email through my illustration site link, or email me directly at See you at the Cons!

One Last Peek at the Moon Tale...

I'm finishing up the colors for this guy, my 1st foray into Sci-Fi, funnily enough. Nice to surprise yourself with where the "mental rolodex" of references build something subliminally and look at it objectively.

COMMISSION TIME! I'm doing a limited convention run again, but always happy to crank out requests. You be seeing some soon. Happy New Year, BTW!

Happy Holidays!

Thanks to the reno/Christmas/working for a living, I clearly haven't been as prolific as I'd hoped! Things ARE in fact rolling, and as you can see, our friends on the moon don't seem to be alone this holiday season, either! All the best for the new year, looking forward to seeing you at the cons!

What Could Go Wrong?

Inks are all done on my sci fi short, and I'm into colour. As you can see, it's a different style than usual. Don't be surprised rised if things still get messy.
Really messy.

To the Moon, Alice!

Now we're rolling.  I'm just finishing up inks on a sci-fi horror story, and thought I'd try some colour out before it moves fully into the digital realm. There'll be lots coming now, so stay tuned! Also, my short story Mary-Lou is in this month's Heavy Metal magazine (#277)! It's on the stands now, but if you take a peek in the link for free comics to the right, you regulars can check her out in all her hillbilly horror!

My contribution to this year's Calgary Comic Expo, which is bigger than ever at 4 full days of geekdom. It would appear this is the year of Game of Thrones at the Con, lots of celebs popping up on the guest list...I think I'm going to have break down and get a Stan Lee photo, I don't see him making many more visits.
Don't forget to get those commissions pre-ordered via my website link! It's the only way to be sure once the show starts chugging. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

My cover for the upcoming Edgar Alan Poe anthology coming down the pipe from the good folks over at Graphics Classics

Applause? No?

Huh. Okay, back to boarding...

I Digress...

Well, THAT feels better. (A quickie on the side at the office!)

Commission Season is Open!

One Mandarin/Iron Man commission finito, time to brave the Christmas crowfs at the shops.  I swear, it's been a few years since I was a 9 to 5er, how the hell do people get anything done?!

Nestling in for the Season...

Just settling into a long board supervision gig, but there's still room for some comics.  Here's an inked page for the Cloudscape Project;  nice to do something local.

Commissions have started for the upcoming Vancouver and Calgary Cons, it's the perfect time to get orders in before hand. I'll start posting them as they happen; I'll be back with an Iron Man one I 'm into now. Contact me through my site in the links!

Bloody Hell #2 Hits the Cyber Shelves!

After a bit of a sideline into Nosferatu-land, BH #2 is finally up here, and it's going to look like as shiny as well gnawed bones on your tablet! Hankering to stay old school and get a hard copy? No need for night terrors, I'll be on the convention circuit with 'em in tow, or you can order directly from any of my sites! (Look to the links to the right, fellow creatures of the night!)

Nosferatu Finals!

I know it's teeny, but here's a sneak peek at where the Nosferatu finals are going.  It's a pretty tall hurdle to compete with the original black & white.  When I found out Graphic Classics wanted color my first thought was "uh oh!"
Break out the limited palette & do some noodlin' to age it up a bit, I think there's something at least honest and fresh goin' on.  More to come!

Bye bye, Summer...

Well, in mercy of the long road to Hallowe'en and all the Nosferatu images that are on the way, I thought I'd brighten up the room with this pick me upper. Courtesy of the aforementioned conceptual gig.

Monday, September 08, 2014

Nosferatu inks are halfway through, but I got sidelined with some board work, and some live-action conceptual work, which was nice.  I don't think my comic booky style sells as well as something more realistic, but I just haven't spent the time learning how to paint properly in Ps... Yet.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

Nosferatu's up and rolling, though I just got contacted for some visual pitch work for a feature...Interesting stuff coming in these days!

Monday, June 30, 2014

Here's the cover for the upcoming Nosferatu book. The folks at Graphic Classics like it first for promo, but I usually like to get through a book and know how to draw the character beforehand. Something as simple as this took quite a few attempts!

Friday, June 20, 2014

Now HERE's a nice gig. A 40 pg adaptation of the classic for Graphic Classics. I'm just in the process of figuring out how to draw him, but I'm hoping to go sketchy with it, even with color. Good times!

Cons & condos achieved...still living amongst boxes, but it's all hopefully going to be smoother now. Here's a couple pages from the upcoming Bloody Hell 2.

I've always wanted to do a western horror...any High Plains Drifter fans out there? Not quite a horror, but definitely an influence for the period with macabre overtones!

Bloody Hell #2 On it's WAY!

Managed to work the bugs out of my short story "Cursed," which'll round out Bloody Hell #2, and am past half way with the inks...but got hit with a couple dream boards that'll slow the pace down for a few weeks. There's some neat stuff in this one, can't wait to get it out there!

Another image from the "I didn't save the original AI files, and had to redo it to make larger prints" file.  Again, a quick sketch from the Jumble days. Even loose, it worked. As a matter of fact, it took me a couple attempts to get it right; the original spontaneity was hard to keep. As soon as I fixed up the anatomy or did anything with the tilt of the head, it just died. It's full of errors, but together they add up to a nice dynamic fluidity.

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Kinda rippin' myself off here, but a LOT of the posts on this blog were from a community blog called Art Jumble.  Every week was a different subject and you just made sure you did a sketch, got it in by Friday. It was great for  keepin' those creative wheels going and I would dedicate about 4 hrs to a piece. Combined with the influence of other styles on the same subject done in the same amount of time (I assume), it was awesome for getting pushed to trying out new things in a set arena. I truly wish the blog would get passed on to parties interested in carrying it, but I suppose they're like myself, and more into creating than managing.
It was the other styles I'd seen that made mine feel rustic, and looking to trying new things, this one which you can compare to the banner above. ( It now comes in 3 different colors!) Being that it was a sketch and new to the software, I dumped the original AI files off this and have to redo it (like others to come) for larger repro.
Cheers to you guys at the Jumble. You get interesting bright periods of time in this industry, and you were one.

Pardon me, but is there something in my throat?

That last post vexed me. Yes. I was incredibly vexed. Out've context, it felt kinda weak. This guy here's got more energy, and still doesn't ruin the "turn" in the short. Bloody Hell 2
's on the way!

New 12 Pager...

A new short story "Talons" is on the way; here's the initial brush & inks (w/a ps tweak) , I'll update it as I move along. More death and dismemberment...Happy New Year!

Friday, November 22, 2013

Here's a sketch I was doing little bits on alongside my storyboarding quota. I didn't really expect to go anywhere with it, but next thing you know the brush & inks' in your hands, and then, just gotta colour it.

Period Piece(s)

More happy thoughts, brought to you by a local commission. The character is a woman dressed as a man who's a vampire beast/thing. It's a big bright beautiful world!

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Greetings from Heathrow Terminal 3!  This turns out to be the first year Vancouver's getting on the Hallowe'en bandwagon and wouldn't you know it, I'll be in the air for 3 count 'em, 3 great parties. All is not a loss however, as I've just been informed "Mary Lou" will be gracing the pages of Heavy Metal in the upcoming months as Asylum Press's Frank Forte will be guest editing for Kevin Eastman.

 Trick? I'll take treat, please....

Saturday, September 14, 2013

There's some great imagery to my western story, but a few hurdles narrative-wise to jump over before I can get to them. I've been working with longer formats a while, and it's tough axing things down to keep it a short story so it won't take over my life!

While I let things simmer, there's a ton of old images that could use some tweaking to make 'em shine a bit brighter (something I can never get to at the time), including this one.  There's actually a series of these '20s images that could use a pass; we'll see what happens in the next few weeks!

With the Time Machine being an ebook until the new year, I'm left a little unarmed for the upcoming Emily Con, hence the blog info at the bottom of the image. This'll be a bit of a different show for me with some postcards promoting the book and site, I'll have some original pages on display, and of course be firing off sketches until the wrist falls off. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

THE MACHINE HAS LANDED (At an E-Store near you!)

For your perusal, The Time Machine is now up for sale at drivethrucomics, com! 50 pages of Black & White Love for the H.G.Wells' classic, stuffed with steampunk and horror flare! The Graphic Classics edition will be out in Feb, but in the meantime enjoy my own "Extended Cut" for a mere 5 buckaroos. The link'll not only take you to this electronic bundle of gold, but also my previous  books "Jimmy Ricochet," and "Bloody Hell!"

Saturday, July 06, 2013

Phew!  40 pages is a lot while you're also working for the man! A tweak here and there, some greys & EFX with Photoshop, and it's there!

Buggers.  They say if you see one, you have a hundred.

Brush & Ink; I'm actually quite proud.
*Updated w/Photoshop polish*

Dudes, I missed you last year, as I was away hiking the West Highland trail  on this weekend, but am back and looking forward to my favourite con!

It's an interesting year for gigs you can't pas up, though it's cutting my con touring down. This year it looks solely to be Vancouver Fan Expo and Calgary.

That would be all good, but from what I'm hearing, Seattle's going great as I write this, and I actually cancelled my table/flight/hotel on that one.  You can't do everything; I'm getting too mellow and whirly in my old age to let myself get stressed out.

Too the slopes!

Sunday, January 13, 2013

Not my favorite image, though it definitely looks cooler with the title on it.

This is part of a series of classic noir stories for the Kindle market, and they sell for peanuts. Definitely worth a look  here.

In other news, I'll be doing a 40 page B & W adaptation of H.G. Well's "the Time Machine" for the good folks over at Graphic Classics. I'm in that wonderful zone now of rethinking the components and trying to come up with something fresh and cool... Hey, I know! I'll make Jeremy Irons the Uber-Morlock, and make the Eloi smart enough to build cliff hanging dwellings that-- aw, naaahhhh....

Sunday, January 06, 2013

Believe it or not, I've written a tremendously pithey post about the progress of a concept through it's final execution and how it sometimes gains it's own personality and guides you elsewhere, but lost it twice. This is what you get.

Back to work it seems, there's some interesting projects on the horizon, you'll be the first to know!
